3. Calico, CA

If you're a fan of the American Southwest, the appeal of a ghost town likely isn't lost on you. Calico was a silver mine town that was left behind in the 1800s.

Fortune seekers carved hundreds of miles in tunnels into the mountains, which lead to the abandonment of this Old West town. It since has been made into a historical landmark that you can visit.

Calico has some awesome land outside of it that off-road enthusiasts love. You can roll through the canyons and hillsides to get a natural look at the Old West. Going off the beaten path allows you to explore these trails in a more authentic way than you could by driving around paved roads.
